| Mexican saltillo or blanket $150 60" x 84" plus 7" in fringe on both ends, 60 - 70 years old Hand loomed Very substantial material, softer, and not as dense as a Navajo piece In researching this piece, I have found them called saltillos. defined as a weaving style characterized by a rectangular shape with borders that frame a central motif (most often a serrated diamond) and a patterned background. It is thought to have originated around AD 1600 near Saltillo, the modern capital of the northern Mexican state of Coahuila. Historically, many of them were made of a combination of linen and fine wool, with one material being used for the warp and the other for the woof. From the hand of this piece, I would guess this is how it was woven, but cannot say with certainty. Potential buyers would probably want to see and feel this in person to decide about material. Brilliant colours: predominating is green, with purples, roses, bright dark red, oranges to brown, cream white and black. Quality of material and workmanship is virtually unmatchable in today's market. This is not the typical tourist souvenir! Condition is excellent for both blanket and fringe. From late 1940s I found it as part of my mother's estate items long left unexplored. Has been in a cedar chest so is clean and undamaged by sunlight. Would make a beautiful wall hanging or throw for a Taos bed or other southwest style bed or couch Moving long distance so unused items must go. Photo files available on request Local enquiries preferred. Thanks for looking!
